Plant Notes:Straggler Daisy is an introduced herbaceous perennial in the Sunflower family (Asteraceae). It is native from southern and south-central Texas south through eastern Mexico to Yucatan and Cuba. In Alabama it can be found primarily in the southern half of the state. Straggler Daisy can be found in lawns, along railroads, in fields, in clearings in woodlands, on creek and river banks, and on roadsides. It is a perennial with a tap root. The prostrate stems are 6-10 inches in length, green or purplish-red in color, and pubescent with appressed hairs. The leaves are opposite, petiolate, deltate to ovate or lanceolate in outline, pubescent, with toothed margins. Flowers are produced in heads. The heads are solitary and short peduncled from the axils of the leaves. Each head has 3-8 inconspicuous yellow ray flowers and 10-20 yellow disc flowers. The fruit is a flattened achene with 2 stout awns. Straggler Daisey is occasionally available from nurseries where it is sold as a shade-tolerant groundcover that tolerates moderate foot traffic.—A.
