Plant Notes:Pineywoods Dropseed is a native perennial in the Gras family (Poaceae). It is a warm season bunch grass—forming distinct clumps rather than spreading over large areas by means of stolon’s or rhizomes. Pineywoods Dropseed can be found in much of eastern and southern Alabama. In occurs in dry sandy pine woods, openings in dry mixed pine/hardwood forests, on rock outcrops, and on roadside banks. Pineywoods Dropseed has narrow hairy evergreen leaves up to twelve inches in length. Panicles of gold and purple flowers/fruit up to two feet in height are produced in the autumn. There are three branches per whorl in the inflorescence. Pineywoods Dropseed grows best in dry sandy or sandy clay soil in full or partial sun. It is very drought tolerant and once established should not need watering. Pineywoods Dropseed is available as plants or seed from some wildflower nurseries. It can also be propagated by dividing older clumps. Pineywoods Dropseed is relatively low growing and can be used at the front of beds or along walkways. It can also be naturalized on banks and in thin woods. --A. Diamond
