Plant Notes:River Swamp Nutrush is a native herbaceous perennial in the Sedge family (Cyperaceae). It can be found in southwest Alabama. River Swamp Nutrush occurs in pine savannas, wet pinelands, in pitcher plant bogs, on wet roadsides, and in seeps. It is a loose clump-forming perennial from slender, aromatic rhizomes. The culms are erect, 5-25 inches in height, and pubescent or glabrous. Leaves are linear, ribbed, pubescent, and entire. The leaf sheath is green or reddish-brown in color, weakly ribbed, and pubescent. Flowers are produced in terminal unbranched spikes of 3-11 nodding glomerules. Each glomerule has 2-8 spikes. The bracts and scales are long ciliate. The fruit is a smooth, shining, white achene narrowed abruptly to a 3-angled base.—A. Diamond
