Taxonomic Notes:Originally described as Erigeron strigosus var. calcicola J. Allison stemming from the Ketona Glade studies by Allison & Stevens (2001) though it actually does not occur on the Ketona glades but on limestone glades in north Alabama and central Tennessee. In 2017, the taxon was raised to species level as E. calcicola (J. Allison) D.B. Poind., B.R. Keener, & Noyes based on evidence demonstrating it was sufficiently distinct from E. strigosus to warrant the change in status (Weakley et al 2017). However, the name E. calcicola was preoccupied by E. calcicola Greenm. 1905 (typified from Hildago, Mexico) making the later name illegitimate. Because E. calcicola was not available, a replacement name was necessary, thus the provision of E. allisonii was created in honor of the original discoverer Jim Allison.--B. Keener

  • Limestone glade – An area where limestone is very close to the surface or exposed where thin layers of soil or soil pockets exist. Limestone glades are usually open areas most often without large trees. They are very dry through much of the growing season except when rain is plentiful in late winter and early spring. The pH is basic.
